Introduction of Jingpohu UNESCO Global Geopark

Jingpohu Geopark is located in Ning’an region of Southeastern Heilongjiang Province, 55 km from Ning’an City and 80 km from Mudanjiang City. It was established as a National Park by the State Council of China in 1982, approved as a National AAAAA Tourist Attractions by the State Administration of Tourism in 2010, and listed as a Global Geopark Network member by UNESCO in 2006.

The Geopark covers a total area of 1,400 km2 and mainly consists of sixteen volcanoes and one volcanic dammed lake. From 12,000 to 5,140 years ago, there were many volcanic eruptions. The lava flow erupted from nearby volcanoes blocked the ancient channel of Mudan River and formed the largest volcanic dammed lake (Jingpo Lake) in China. Here, the landscape of volcanic geoheritage is not only typical and systematic, but also rare and intact, known as a natural volcano museum.

The famous scenic spots in the park include three types of landscapes. The first is the landscape of volcanic edifice, such as volcanic cones, volcanic craters, lava plateau, etc. The second is the small-sized volcanic landscape, such as pahoehoe lava (wavy lava, ropy lava, steamed-bread lava, reptile-like lava), aa, lava tunnel, lava cascade, lava collapse, effusive dome, swelling dome and ridge, hornito or driblet cone, etc. The third is the unique natural landscape formed by the combination of volcanic lavas and special geographical features, such as Jingpo Lake, Diaoshuilou Waterfalls, Forest in Crater, and Volcanic Wetland, etc.

Built in the ancient Balhae Kingdom during Tang Dynasty, the capital Shangjing Longquanfu in the geopark is the only well-preserved archaeological relic in China and is highly valuable for realizing Balhae Kingdom and Tang Dynasty history.

The geoheritages in the geopark are of great significance for studying volcanic activity, the formation geomorphology and eco-geography in the Jingpohu area as well as in the eastern China during the Cenozoic. In addition to spectacular scenery, the Geopark also enjoys rich biodiversity. There inhabit about 878 wild plants and 295 wild vertebrates.

Now,there are 77 hotels (10 of them are above 3 stars) in the park, more than 10,000 beds in total, more than 200 various cruise ships and more than 70 green environmental friendly tourist vehicles.

Welcome to Jingpohu UNESCO Global Geopark in China. Let’s take care of the resources and environment here and make it sustainable for future generations
