Palace City Relic of Balhae Shangjing

The Palace City, covering an area of 1,050 m from east to west and 1,400 m from south to north, is located to the north of the Imperial City and is divided into four parts: Palace City, Dongye City, Xiye City and Yuanbi City.

The position and pattern of the Palace City in Shangjing are the same as Taiji Palace of Chang'an City of the Tang Dynasty. With stone walls and protection trenches outside, the Palace City is a regular rectangle in plane view, with a length of 720 m from south to north, and a width of 620 m from east to west.

There were four gates to the Palace City, among which the south gate is commonly known as Five Phoenixes Tower, a large palace door in the middle and a side door on each side. In the west doorway of the south gate, there are wheel track grooves. In the symmertrical site of eastern region, there is a “fake door” with a gate tower but without doorway. Between the east wall and the west wall, there was a door leading to Dongye City and Xiye City. With Yuanbi City in the middle, the north gate is opposite to the north gate of the Outer City. Meanwhile, there are remnants of the turret sites in the northern corner of the wall in the Palace City.

In the centre of the Palace City, there are five palaces sites in tandem arrangement. The large-scale Palace No.1, Palace No.2 along with their corridors and square are fully equipped with facilities, thus enabling them the main palce for morning sessions and ceremony. Palace No.3 and Palace No.4 are connected through corridors. Palace No.4 is equipped with heated brick beds and Palace No.5 is a tower for defense.
