Xiangshui Rice – Imperial Tribute Rice Planted on Lava Plateau

When the volcanoes in the Jingpohu area exploded, the hot lava flows drained down along the river valley, blocked the upper river valley of Mudan River, and thus formed the biggest volcanic dammed lake in our country – Jingpo Lake. The fertile soil on the lava plateau stretching for more than 100 km becomes the breeding ground for the famous imperial tribute rice, Xiangshui Rice.

On the land, the upper layer humus is the soil formed after rock weathering and humus accumulation, among which the minerals, organic matter, trace elements are quite abundant. Lower lava plateau absorbs heat in the day time, and releases heat in the evening, which makes the land and water temperature here is 2-3℃ higher than common rice field, as a result, the natural environment here is suitable for the growth of rice in the northeast area with huge temperature difference between day and night. The high-quality water used to plant the rice is from Jingpo Lake, which is pure, clear and free from industrial pollution. Therefore the rice here enjoys rich nutritious with excellent taste. Over one thousand years ago, people of  Balhae Kindom planted the Xiangshui Rice and took it as tribute to Empress Consort Wu Zetian in Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasty. Xiangshui Rice was always a tribute to imperial family.
